If you've visited any bookstore lately, you know that they've got a slew of books which are designed to show you how to program in the Java language. Unlike those books, however, Java Applets and Channels Without Programming will not attempt to make a programmer out of you. On the contrary, the book is designed not to teach you how to program Java applets, but rather how to use them on your Web pages.

The book features over 90 applets on the included CD-ROM that you can use as is on your own pages. It also includes do-it-yourself channels, and show you how to use them on your site as well, but only a small portion (around 50 of the book's 350 pages) of the book is focused on channels.

The book is divided into convenient sections based on the type of effect you're trying to achieve on your site. Initially the book goes over Java basics, such as the code you'll need to add an applet to your site, and the parameters an applet may use. The book/CD includes a special tool, the Configurator, which is used to adjust and change the parameters of an applet, letting the developer bypass the repetitious changes needed to clear the browser's cache so the newest parameters can be checked.

Many types of applets are covered, including sections on:

  • Text applets
  • Ticker applets
  • Lines, Buttons, Bullets and Counters
  • Date and Time applets
  • Links and Email
  • Images and Animation
  • Kid's Stuff
  • Miscellaneous applets
The book also covers Marimba's Castanet tool and how to use it, and gives several examples of channels and how to set them up. Each applet in the book is explained, with tips, sample code showing how to insert it into a page, and illustrations in the book explain how the applet is supposed to look.

Books such as Java Applets and Channels Without Programming, along with Web sites such as the Java Boutique are enabling non-programmers to utilize sophisticated Java applets on their Web pages. If you'd like a large scale collection of applets to work with, this may be just the book you're looking for.
