Help with offering character customization on website.

I’m working on a business idea very similar to that of Hooray Heroes (but I won’t be selling books) where I have my customers create their custom characters through my website, and it is automatically generated in a personalized version of my product. I’ll be using my own artwork like they do. I will however have more customization variations.

Please help pointing me in the right direction. I don’t know where to start.
