Domain price has changed after I showed interest

Hello community,

I am working on a project for which I need a very specific domain, which happens to be a premium domain. In the past few months, I have been searching the domain repeatedly on various sites that offer the domain for registration, in order to compare prices, but also to see if the price would change over time. I believe this was my first mistake.

I then decided to register the domain, but the company had difficulties registering it. In the end we cancelled the registration, because the price given by the Registry (around $5000) was much higher than initially offered.

I kept on looking and searching for the domain elsewhere, sometimes also just for fun to see if it was still available, and there I found it on a site that looked very promising and serious, for half the price the other company was asking. My biggest mistake was that I didn’t register it at that point.

Now, a few weeks later, me wanting to register the domain, I notice it’s not available anymore. I ask the company, they ask the Registry, and the price is now four times what it was before.

I’m not sure what to do now. I’ve searched for the domain on various sites, with different IP addresses (using Tor). And like I said I had tried to register it before. I suppose they can see all of that. I believe I am the only one looking for this domain. It was never registered yet, so I suppose there isn’t that much demand for it.

They probably think a lot of people are wanting to register it now, and raised the price. What would you suggest me to do? They asked if I am interested in the new price. I haven’t replied them yet. Should I say I’m interested in the old price and that’s it? That price was okay for me, a lot of money but I would pay it. It would be my limit however, anything above I’m not ready to pay because it’s not worth it.

Thanks for reading and I’m looking forward to your suggestions!

Best regards,
Max Zimmer aka petboob

@Steve_R_JonesmoderatorSep 19.2019 — Pick another name - purchase it ASAP.

Thanks to "cookies" and other methods, many retailers raise the price on all sort of items like plane tickets to televisions etc...

@petboobauthorSep 20.2019 — @Steve_R_Jones#1608916 Yes, that’s what I supposed. However, the problem is, I can’t pick another name - I need this one, otherwise the project doesn’t make sense.

What do you suggest me doing in order to increase my chances to get it at the former price? I think I will just be honest with them and tell them how it was as well as my price limit, and if they don’t offer it to me at that price, I simply won’t start that business.

My assumption is that nobody will register it, as it has existed for a long time and was never taken. The demand for it just doesn’t seem that high. And if it suddenly does become registered, I will suppose it’s someone involved in selling this domain, but that won’t put any pressure on me (there’s similar tactics in real estate by the way).

Also, can someone suggest me a neutral site where I can lookup if a domain name is taken without having companies know I searched for it and raise the price? Does it help if I delete my cookies or does it make no difference?

Thanks.

you seem to be unaware of how domain name registration works

any name you can think of That Is NOT already registered

can be purchased for less than twenty USD a year

names that are already registered by someone are their property

the person who has the registration is the only one who can sell it

they can demand any price they choose

the owner of the domain may post it for sale at various places at various prices

they may or may not be obligated to sell it at the posted price

use google to find a web site that does "whois" (type whois into google)

here is what I get when i do a whois on msn.com

Domain Name: MSN.COM

notice the expiry date

maybe they will fail to renew the registration before that date

should they fail to renew you can then register for a modest fee

if the whois search reviles the name of the owner then contact that person

and negotiate a price to purchase it

@petboobauthorSep 20.2019 — @DaveyErwin#1608919 I understand what you‘re saying. The domain I want is a „Reserved Domain Name“ by the Registry that registered the TLD. That‘s all it says when I search for it in Whois. So it doesn‘t look like it‘s registered but I suppose it does seem to „belong“ to someone (the company that registered that TLD), right?
