Can’t connect domain to new hosting account

I’m trying to connect a domain to a new website that is hosted on GoDaddy. However, the domain is currently attached to the old hosting account, which was Frontier (note: the old website was developed 10+ years ago by an employee who has been gone from the company for almost the same amount of time). GoDaddy support told me that I can’t attach the domain to the new website until the domain is removed from the old account. The problem is Frontier doesn’t offer hosting services anymore and any time I talk to Frontier support, I get stonewalled. They either transfer me between departments multiple times, state that they cannot do anything or that it’s out of their reach. I’ve also talked to my domain’s registrar (Network Solutions) and they said they can’t do anything either. So is this domain forever stuck or is there some way to be able to connect it to my new website? If it is “stuck” in unaccessible land, is there another option? Maybe a sub-domain? I apologize for any ignorance. I usually just design, not focus on this end of website.

@NachfolgerMay 28.2020 — The only thing you need to worry about is your DNS servers. This has nothing to do with the old hosting unless they are your domain name register, which they are NOT.

Log into your Network Solutions control panel, find the DNS settings, and change it to the information provided by Godaddy. Don't panic when it doesn't appear instantly, for the new DNS details to propagate, it usually takes approx 2-5hrs **or more**.

By the way... Godaddy and Network Solutions are the worst two companies you could ever work with. Scummy support and overpriced products.

Should've used Namecheap.

@ty4050authorMay 29.2020 — Thank you for your response! I've tried changing the a records and nameservers to point to the GoDaddy IP addresses and nameservers but every time I ended up with a 404 error (and I did wait for five days for the change ot take place). Also, when I tried to use GoDaddy's "attach domain" to website function, I could never get past the "Site Already In Use" check that GoDaddy has. It always recognized my domain as in use. This is the point where GoDaddy support said it was still attached to the old website on Frontier and that I couldn't "attach" the domain to GoDaddy until that old connection was broken.

A side note, I'm using GoDaddy's WordPress hosting service if that matters at all.

Unfortunately, I had no say in choosing GoDaddy and Network Solutions. I do usually use Namecheap and I definitely wish I could use them now after experiencing GoDaddy and Network Solutions support.

Well the 404 error is a good sign. That means the domain **does** resolve to **some** webhost. The problem is, what webhost is it resolving to? If it's anything besides Godaddy, you did something wrong.

There is SOME truth to this, but not in any major sense. When you visit a website that's on **shared** hosting, the web host's servers find your particular "website" (read, the files) by looking at the domain first.

Eg. if I register domain www.example.com and put a simple website up on a **shared** host, then I register www.example2.org, the web host knows what content to show for www.example.com vs www.example2.org.

The issue is that Godaddy has some sort of internal block to prevent you "registering" your domain with **THEM** until it no longer resolves to your old host. I wouldn't put it past Godaddy with not providing an override.

Unfortunately, there's really nothing that we (The forum) can do here. This is a issue between your domain register (Namecheap) and your (horrific) webhost (Godaddy). Completely forget about your previous web host. They have no say in the matter, all that matters is that you resolve your DNS servers properly to Godaddy's servers.

There is one link I want to leave you with, [Find My GoDaddy DNS Servers](https://www.godaddy.com/help/find-my-godaddy-nameservers-12318).

If you're new to the website/development field, you might find yourself terrified by the seemingly complex job of changing a DNS server, but I can assure you it's no major task. It's a matter of copying two URLs and pasting them in the proper locations.

Should you have any further questions, I'll gladly answer them. But I'm fairly certain I can't do more than this.

Best of luck.

@ty4050authorMay 31.2020 — I really appreciate your response to all of this. You have provided more insight than all of Network Solutions and GoDaddy support combined (5+ calls/tickets for both companies).

A GoDaddy support specialist did say that my domain registrar could provided an override/forceful break from old host. But Network Solutions said all they could do is change the A records.

I'm going to retry updating the A records and Nameservers again and see what happens.

Thank you again for your assistance!
