Cannot get rid of White Space

I am having a problem getting rid of white space on my website between my main div (header) and my body div. Also, at the bottom of my page, there is white space. Ive tried quite a few things, and the only thing I can find to fix it, at least cosmetically, is by adding padding-top to my body div, and adding <br> to the bottom of my page before closing the html

I am aware that without actually seeing the HTML, CSS, Javascript etc its relatively hard to give an exact diagnosis, but are there any common fixes to this? Or why is there white space appearing to begin with.
