How to use Node.js?

I am starting out in web developing, so these questions might be silly. I already downloaded Node from the official website and here are my questions about it:
-How do I implement it? Do I do it in a JS file or in a project?
-What visibly changes in my project once it is implemented?
-It is a browserless environment for running Javascript, so why does every time I execute my project, it opens in a browser?
