URLs for multilanguage website

I have noticed that Microsoft has de-at de-de which is basically telling google and everyone else there alive : “hey, this is a german language website for germany and this is a german language website for austria”

So my question now is: is that really needed? From SEO perspective is it a problem if one just has a /de/ in his url and that’s it… (please answer the question without considering “yeeah but you might have different services for Austrians so it is normal to have de-at… bnecause I do not have different services for them”)

So I saw that teamviewer uses /de/ for all german speaking countries.

Me being in Austria am presented with simplz /de/ url

the English version of their website has US-en so yeah... hard to tell but I think this has no impact to SEO.

I mean why would it? If the content is good, in an appropriate language and is served to interested audience, what is the big deal?

These links which you are getting in the Google analytics it is due to the submission of URLs on multiple sites. Most of the time when people do search engine submissions then you get these types of URLs in the form of inbound traffic.

creating a subfolder /de/

or

creating a subfolders Germany /de-DE/, Switzerland /de-CH/ and Austria /de-AT/

What are the differences in the way google sees one version and the other

if it has any practical meaning or difference.


I am not seeing anything nor getting anything in google analytics
