I'm coding a slideshow using one of the ubiquotous lightbox clones. (I was hired in part to help them get a better SE ranking).

For a single entry, should i put a title tag in both the anchor tag and the image tag??? Example below. i Googled this and have come up with inconsistent results.

The search engines don't consider the 'title' attribute, but they do look at the 'alt' attribute for images. The 'alt' attribute does contribute to ranking for both normal keyword searches and image searches. But focus on describing the image and far less on keywords you may be targeting for the page itself.

i did a tut once via Lynda.com. i think they said the title in tag in anchor tags were important.

The title attribute in an <a>nchor tag can be useful because it's shown as a tooltip/pop-up label in most browsers, so you can embellish the information presented to users when they hover over the link. But it has no effect on search engine rankings.
