Although social bookmarking offers most of its users a lot of advantages, it is not without its share of disadvantages. A lot of internet users, especially those who have not used social bookmarking before, are unaware that one of the problems that this tag-based system is experiencing is the lack of appropriate and much-needed standards that is set for the keywords, vocabulary and controlled terms. Keep in mind that social bookmarking users use keywords and phrases to tag their favorite bookmarked websites in order to make it easier for other users to find it, tag and bookmark it and share it with other users as well. Since the tag-based system relies on people to organize their bookmarked websites and Web pages, this means that human error is very possible, and this can create a lot of problems, especially in terms of organization and consistency. What this means is that people will be given total control on how they tag and organize their bookmarked sites. If they use the wrong tag, or if they create an inconsistent standard and managing system for their tags, then other users will find it very difficult to find what they are looking for since all the bookmarked websites would be very confusing already.
