I have seen lots of companies offering directory submission service.

My Question is whether it is effective and helps rank a website better in organic search engine results ?

Have you used Directory Submission (Free, Paid or Link Exchange Type) and whether it has helped in promoting your website?

If you will listed your website in some related directory sites suppose you have a health related site then you need to listed your site in a health related directory site. It may added some value to your site. Google give priority to related authorized link.

I don`t think Directory submission is completely useless. You can submit your website in highly ranked websites, still it will work.

Directory Submission is one of the factors of link building.The major purpose of doing directory submission is to collect and build more backlinks to our website.But it only effort of posting in high page rank websites only.

Directory submissions is ok but not what it used to be after recent algorithm updates. One directory that still holds a lot of weight is the Yahoo Directory...but the catch there is that it cost around $300 just to apply to be included ( and that doesn't even guarantee you'll make it in!)

Directory submissions are good for the new projects in the starting time as they provide a good backlink along with other activities like classifieds, blog commenting and many more. After two to three months you can leave directories which may not help that much.

Directory Submission is not effective after Google Penguin update. Backlinks from Directory submission are considered as low quality from search engine and does not have any effect on website's ranking.

Use Directory Submission with few quality and trust worthy directory site. Instead of thousands of worthless directories.

If you can create the directory 100 to 150 per day this is not good things,

you can first the filter the directory list with ip address or then you can submit 4-5 directory per days ,this is benifit to you, because you can work that is quality work not do spam work.

Directory submission is the main part of OFF page seo and submit the link only quality web directory link as demoz, golink directory, and more....

its better you avoid directory submission where the google has stated there must be an average of 100 links per page and no directory is above pr6 only dmoz and others so you better focus on other tasks and build relationships rather than link building efforts for the website.

Directory submission is not effective now-a-days, but yes if we do some quality submissions on high PR and authority site, it is definitely worth today too.

Directory submission is not that effective like before but it is still useful. Now submission in bookmarking site is still an effective way, have a look at Folkd or akonter bookmarks
