Hiya,

Is the mozilla organization (mozilla/firefox/camino browsers) not associated with Netscape anymore? I thought I heard sometime ago that they've disassociated themselves from Netscape, who in turn are owned by AOL/TimeWarner.

Can someone give me the skinny on all this?

Netscape spun mozilla.org off to create Navigator 5 because they knew it was going to take a complete rewrite and they didn't have the resources. AOL/Netscape provided most of the funding and staffing until AOL eliminated all of Netscape except the namee. I suspect almost all the original Netscape employees are gone by now and I'm sure the AOL funding is greatly reduced or eliminated. That whole conglomerate, AOL/Time/Warner, is falling apart now.

Anyway, so currently AOL/Netscape is not funding mozilla at all?

Yes, but that wasn't an educational thread. If the thread has any educational value, that it doesn't belong in the Coffee Lounge (unless you are ready to have that thread totally hijacked).

I've been wondering now, what exactly does AOL plan to do with Netscape? They have that contract with Microsoft binding them to Internet Explorer, don't they?

Besides a name people recognize and the possibility of major corporate backing (AOL ain't dead yet mother <expletive>)... no.

Well thank you for clarifying all that up guys...

Anyway, the reason I was asking about AOL/Netscape was because another web developer (he is such an IE proponent it is not even funny) was telling me that AOL/Netscape was still supporting Mozilla. And that's the reason he was saying that mozilla is such a crappy browser! And that everything should be developed for IE only!

That just drove me up the wall

They may want to run http://webtest.scanit.be/bcheck/ to see why IE isn't so hot. Firefox 1.0 Pre-Re should come back with no warnings, or anything else. The same can't be said for IE.

Since this is a business oriented thread on Netscape, Red Hat just bought a lot of the Netscape Enterprise servers from AOL/TW.
